It was once used as a Coaching Inn and is situated on the old coaching road between Whitby and Scarborough (now a quiet country lane leading to the beach). The house has links with the many smuggling activities, which were once a flourishing business on this coastline. There is still, in the east wall above the cellar, a 9" x 3" window from which the smugglers would watch out for the constabulary and then shine a light when it was safe to bring up contraband through tunnels from the beach.
