Who are Rotaract?
Rotaract is an organisation open to anyone aged between 18-30 years, aimed mainly at providing social, fundraising and community based activities.
There are currently 13 Rotaract clubs in our District, over 200 within Rotaract in in Great Britain and Ireland with more than 6,000 worldwide in over 140 countries with an estimated membership of 150,000.
Each club organises its own social activities, which could just be a trip down the pub, ten-pin bowling, or maybe a meal, a theatre trip, or even a holiday abroad! The Clubs in the District regularly get together by either attending each others events or a District arranged event.
We also find time to raise funds for charities and good causes, and occasionally help out in the local community.
Rotaract is part of Rotary International, and is a worldwide organisation offering like-minded young adults from all over the globe the chance to meet and organise events with other people regardless of age, race or background. |

The Scarborough Railway Society is one of the oldest railway societies in England and was idea of the late Ken Hoole well known railway author and historian. The object of the society was and still is to encourage interest in every aspect of railway equipment, history and development. The present chairman is Mr Robin Lidster author of numerous railway publications, which portray the local region, the most, celebrated of these being “The Scarborough & Whitby Railway”. Our vice-president Mr. Fred Rowntree, a founder member, was present at the inaugural meeting which was held in a garage in Scarborough and has been a member ever since. The society has had many meeting places over the years. One of the earliest was in a North Eastern Railway coach in the old goods yard in Scarborough where today you would find the cash dispensers belonging to the Safeway supermarket? Our present venue, which we have used for the last 15 years, is the Public Library in Scarborough where meetings are held every other Friday from the beginning of September until the end of May. Starting at 7-45pm and ending around 9-30pm the subject of our meetings varies greatly but regularly will feature slides or prints or occasionally a video. We have a number of invited speakers including some of the top railway photographers and historians in the country. The subscription for one years membership is currently £7:00.
